Climate Strategy
Many government bodies/organisations across the UK and indeed the globe have declared a Climate Emergency.

In May 2019, Penrith Town Council declared a Climate and Ecological Emergency and has developed the first stage of a strategy, which is based on the vision that by 2030 Penrith will be carbon neutral.
Our key partners have helped us develop the Councils strategy to make Penrith a Carbon Neutral Town.

We believe that the 2030 target, will only be achieved by working in partnership across community, with the public, with organisations and with businesses large and small and we are working in partnership with Penrith Business Improvement District and the District and County Council’s. We have successfully help launch Plastic Clever Penrith with our partners Penrith Action for Community Transition (PACT) and Cumbria Action for Sustainability (CAfS) and other stakeholders, joined the Refill scheme led by PACT.

Zero Carbon Cumbria Partnership
The Town Council is a member of Zero Carbon Cumbria Partnership and we are keen to support and assist the counties progression towards carbon neutrality.
Over 70 Cumbrian organisations are working together to drive down the county’s carbon emissions.
What’s the partnership for?
The Zero Carbon Cumbria Partnership includes a wide range of organisations with a key role to play in decarbonising the county at the pace and scale required by climate science, and ensuring that Cumbria benefits from the opportunities this brings.
The purpose of the group is to plan and oversee a radical programme of action that will enable Cumbria to become a carbon neutral county and to mitigate the likely impact of existing climate change.
Who’s on the partnership?
Member organisations include the county’s local authorities, businesses, local sustainability groups, schools, the NFU, NHS, police, Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), national parks, Natural England, the Environment Agency, Electricity North West and United Utilities and many more.
Penrith Town Council has welcomed Eden District Council’s (EDC) commitment to becoming a zero carbon authority by 2030, and aspires for the district to be net zero CO2 in the same timeframe – in accordance with the date set in UN guidance in 2018.
EDC is launching the Zero Carbon Eden (ZCE) Partnership which will bring together public bodies, businesses, experts and practitioners, who can play a crucial role in reducing Eden’s carbon footprint, in improving ecology and increasing biodiversity. The aim is to bring partners together to establish and disseminate best practice and make plans to achieve net zero emissions in the Eden District by 2030.
